	The historic heart of a previously large estate is still at the centre of the family’s link with Exmoor. Its fascinating history includes eccentric owners, extravagant architecture, literature and ground breaking scientific endeavour.

	We are grateful to Will Stone for allowing us to share his evocative article, first published by The London Magazine in the February/March 2020 edition:

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Following the south west coast path to Culbone at Exmoor’s edge, the observant might note one thickly wooded combe where the tree crowns are in striking contrast to the dominant native oak and ash. Here, soaring outsize pines, firs and other exotic foreigners create different shades, patterns and textures. Halfway up this hill on a now overgrown escarpment once stood Ashley Combe, an opulent Italianate style mansion, which enjoyed unimpeded breath-taking views across the Bristol Channel to the Welsh coast.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; In 1835 the house was extended and improved by new owner and engineer Lord William King, (later the First Earl of Lovelace) as a mansion retreat for his new wife, Ada Byron, gifted mathematician and daughter of the celebrated poet. At her beloved rural retreat of ‘Ashley’, where romantically envisaged landscaped gardens descended in terraces down to the sea, Ada strolled with polymath Charles Babbage along the so called ‘Philosopher’s Walk’, the two discussing properties of the latter’s ‘Difference Engine’, distant ancestor of the computer.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Boosted by Ada’s fortune, King planted trees in their thousands; Canadian and Scots pine, cypress, arbutus, bay, copper beech, pinactus, cedar... Eccentricity and whimsy became the hallmark of Ashley Combe’s terrain, where a penchant for medieval fortification rubbed shoulders with the Neo-Romanesque. What seemed a recipe for architectural and artistic suicide proved the contrary, for the landscape was receptive and seemingly incongruous elements kindled a unique aura. Ada was captivated by her husband’s plans, ‘Your drawings of Ashley Combe excite my curiosity about the bastions and battlements. You must have fancied yourself a feudal Lord...’ To the rear of the mansion King employed the natural rock face to anchor imposing neo-Romanesque arcades and galleries.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The Lovelace estate was an encomium to fantasy and reverie, to invention, held together by an intricate labyrinth of pathways and drives, most alluringly serpentine and descending in spirals around the hill. Ornamental towers, archways, bridges and follies proliferated and selected vantage points for sea-gazing were topped with a crenelated battlement. King even provided his wife with a stone bathing cottage down on the rocky shore, which Ada could privately access by secret paths and steps cut into the cliff. Most audaciously King devised a system of tunnels and cuttings allowing common tradesmen to make deliveries without they or their carts ever being seen by the privileged incumbents. Against the odds a few of the shorter tunnels remain, absorbed into the south west path. Entranced hikers navigate these eerie sloping passages their tread soundless upon dense rust-coloured carpets of dead leaves.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Since the house was demolished as a dilapidated liability in 1972, nature has determinedly reclaimed the site as if to veil its history. Yet time has assumed a dual role, as both agent of destruction and as an artist whose palette is decay. The residual bones of those magical gardens which transformed this woodland hill into a spiritually ennobling retreat constantly shift and slip under the weight of collapsing trunks, the violations of undiscriminating roots, until the coup de grace of a landslide. Only the fir trees King planted soar defiantly, emerging out of the strangling lower vegetation like abandoned descendants still vainly signalling their presence. The spectral contours of Ashley Combe appear immune from final expungement, a melancholy waft of antiquity and nostalgia breeds authentic atmosphere, a persuasive poetic sentience, that miraculously circumvents linear time.
	Will Stone is a writer, poet and translator of French, Franco-Belgian and German literature.
He has contributed reviews and essays on art and literature to The TLS, The London Magazine, RA Magazine, Poetry Review, Agenda, Apollo and The Spectator.

locals alike. Oysters from Porlock Bay are sold in season near the tidal quay.

Immediately
west of Ashley Combe the South West Coast Path climbs the bluff 1½ miles
through Yearnor Wood to Culbone Church, England’s smallest complete church with
a history dating to the Saxon era. The path leads onward into North Devon
reaching Countisbury and Lynmouth 10 miles further down the coast.

	Historic
Dunster is well worth a visit for its characterful high street marked by a 17th
century yarn market at one end and Norman castle at the other. Thanks to its
enduring popularity the village has numerous dining options and no shortage of
local walks to build an appetite.

		<description>Exploring Exmoor

	Exmoor spans West Somerset and NorthDevon with high, open moorland, a variety of different woodlands and a dramatic coastline.
Famous for its red deer and Exmoor ponies, the area offers activities and interest for all the family: wildlife safaris, trekking, riding, biking, kayaking, fishing and boat trips can be arranged locally.

What our guests say

A splendid place, quiet, clean and comfortable and an easy walk along the beach to the Weir. We are keen to book for next year if possible."&#38;nbsp;
Mr H, Milbanke guest, July 2024
We had a wonderful stay in Lovelace, such a tranquil location, and after one day back at work we feel the need to return very soon!

 Mr and Mrs C H, Lovelace guests, July 2024

A most gorgeous and peaceful location. Stunning walks and views
not to mention the wildlife. The garden at Milbanke packed full of bee and
butterfly plants and flowers. The cottage was spacious with super comfy beds,
spotless with all the household equipment you could ever need. I must also
mention the well stocked bookcase. The choices were endless including classics,
information and history. We hope to return soon. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
Mrs
A S, Milbanke guest, July 2023

We had a wonderful stay and it was so healing to spend time
in such a setting. The books on your shelves were the best we’d ever come
across. We will definitely be booking again and have recommended you already to
family and friends looking for somewhere special to stay.
Mr and Mrs A D, Milbanke guests May 2023

Loved our
time at Lovelace. Such a gloriously quiet and tucked away location.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
Mr
and Mrs R W, Lovelace guests May 2023

This self-catering
cottage is in a great location with wonderful views of Porlock Bay. The house
itself is very clean and very well equipped for a week’s stay for six
people. We have been coming to the Porlock area since 1987 and this house
is probably the best one we have found that suits our needs.
Loads of walking
from house and 10mins to Pub over fields. Uschi, the owner, has been very
helpful during both bookings that we have had. The information regarding area
and house is excellent.
I don’t normally write reviews. But when you
find a gem you have to give credit where it is due.

 Paul Stedman, Milbanke guest November 2022

It was a lovely place to
stay and felt like a home from home. I expect that we will be back again. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
Mr B A, Lovelace guest, October 2022
The location was fabulous.
Very peaceful and tranquil. Excellent quaint cottage located within the woods
with the beach on your doorstep.&#38;nbsp;
Mr. I J, Lovelace guest, September 2022

We had a wonderful time at Milbanke, the cottage and
location is fantastic and it was so peaceful and quiet, just what we needed.

 Mr S G Milbanke guest, September 2022

Such a beautiful
location and the cottage is perfect. Thanks for managing
the holiday so well, it did help to make the whole holiday experience at
Milbanke brilliant.
Mrs. C, Milbanke guest June 2022&#38;nbsp;

It was so peaceful there and a lovely situation, especially at this time
of&#38;nbsp; year. We are not great walkers but we enjoyed/survived the walk to
Culbone Church ....coming back seemed a lot easier and into Porlock Weir.

We found the house to be warm and comfortable and very well equipped. It
had all that we needed and more. We really appreciated the helpful information sent
by the owner before our arrival. The views from the property were wonderful.

We will be more than happy to recommend the cottage to others, as it was
to us.
J B, Milbanke guest April 2022

We
booked a family break away at Milbanke for October. It's our 2nd time staying
here and third time collectively at both properties - the other being Lovelace
- and it will definitely not be our last! Milbanke is perfectly positioned with
private access to the beach and walking distance to Porlock Weir. It has served
us well from holidays with our children when they were young and stood the test
of time for holidays with them as teenagers! It is a stunning home in a
stunning location and we feel it's 100% perfect. I'd highly recommend. Many
thanks for another excellent holiday.

 Mrs
M K, Milbanke guest October 2021

Milbanke is a lovely property in a beautiful situation and
we are already planning another visit.&#38;nbsp; The walks from the cottage have
been fabulous. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
Mrs J M, Milbanke
guest September 2021

We had a wonderful stay at Milbanke, thank you! It is in such
a beautiful location that you can’t help but relax and enjoy it!

 Mrs S H, Milbanke guest, July 2021

Excellent cottage with very good pre visit information and detail from the owner prior our visit. The cottage is secluded but well situated with around 20 minutes walk down a walking track to the village where there is the harbour, pub, and hotel as well as other places to eat. The beach is large rocks rather than sand so good shoes are needed. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
Mr K W, Milbanke guest, September 2020

Just about the nicest cottage we've ever stayed in - and certainly the best value. The only thing we were worried about, as non-drivers, was being too isolated - but the bus service to Porlock and Minehead was excellent. We would really love the chance to visit again one day.
Mr S Howard, Milbanke guest, May 2019

We had a very peaceful relaxed stay - Lovelace is in such a
beautiful position and is a lovely cottage.
 Mrs P, Lovelace guest September 2022

We had a wonderful time at
Lovelace.&#38;nbsp; It was perfect for a quiet and cool stay. Many thanks for a really enjoyable
stay in a comfortable and idyllic location.&#38;nbsp;
Mrs. G D, Lovelace guest, July 2022

Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely
little cottage. We loved being hidden away in the woods and the dog loved
walking down to Porlock Weir or uphill through the woods. The cottage was very
clean and comfortable with everything we needed. We hope to come again.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
Mr
and Mrs R, Lovelace guests, June 2022

We had a wonderful few days. It is the most idyllic and peaceful cottage
we have ever stayed in. We will certainly be booking again and recommending to
our friends.

 Mr and Mrs T Taylor, Lovelace guests, June 2022

Absolutely lovely. If you want peace and quiet this is the place to
stay. Will DEFINITELY stay here again.
Karina, Lovelace guest June 2022

The cottage had everything you would need for your stay, was comfortable
and clean. Very secluded and beautiful views.

Susan, Lovelace guest May 2022

We had a
wonderful time in your cosy cottage and will return.

Mr J F,
Lovelace guest March 2022

Perfect quiet cottage for a very hot week in July, as we
could go on many walks direct from the cottage into the woods with the dogs.
Lovelace was the best cottage we have stayed in; well maintained and in such a
lovely setting in the woods next to the stream and such a delightful walk down
to Porlock Weir. The garden and Ashley Combe estate were full of
beautiful fuchsias dotted everywhere along with buddleias on which the
butterflies were in abundance which made it all magical. We will definitely return.W &#38;amp;
R, Lovelace guests, July 2021

Beautiful
cottage; if you want to get away and have peace and quiet this is the place for
you. Porlock Weir is a lovely little village, with lots of walks nearby. Would
definitely &#38;nbsp;recommend.

Wendy
&#38;amp; Russell Evans, Lovelace guests May 2021

Beautiful
accommodation. Can’t recommend it enough. We have stayed twice at Lovelace and
will definitely be returning.
Mrs. Chloe B, Lovelace guest, April 2021

Set in a stunning, peaceful woodland location complete with tumbling, rocky stream immediately below cottage windows. Spotlessly clean and cosy with roaring open fire and comfortable beds. Wooded walks straight from the door and coast path to Porlock Weir close by. Very atmospheric and calming environment.

Mrs C C, Lovelace guest, October 2020

This cottage is full of charm. It is located in a steep hill on a private toll road. The access through the toll gate is narrow and my old Ford Galaxy had little more than an inch of clearance on both wing mirrors. A bridle path runs past the side of the property but we saw just 3 sets of people all week. It is dog friendly and restricting the dogs to the kitchen and utility area was not a problem. The surrounding area is exquisite. Great eating houses a moderate walk away. A great holiday venue. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
